SPECIALITIES - CARPAL TUNNEL

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful hand and arm condition caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist. Numerous factors are associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, including the anatomy of the wrist, underlying health problems, and possibly patterns of hand use. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located on the palm side of your wrist. This tunnel protects one of the main nerves to the hand and nine tendons that bend the fingers. Compression of the median nerve may produce numbness, pain, and hand weakness that are associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. Fortunately, for most people who develop carpal tunnel syndrome, proper treatment can relieve the pain and numbness and restore normal use of their wrists and hands.

Dr. Milne uses both open and endoscopic treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. Open surgical procedures use a small skin incision, allowing for him to see the wrist structures and to carefully perform the operation. Endoscopic carpal tunnel treatment is a newer procedure in which the surgeon makes a small incision in order to make one or two small openings for inserting the endoscope. The endoscope is a thin, fiber optic TV camera that allows the surgeon to see inside the carpal tunnel as the transverse carpal ligament is carefully released. Dr. Milne will provide a full evaluation by obtaining a history of the problem, followed by a thorough physical examination. He will then define a non-surgical or surgical treatment plan depending on findings and possibly associated testing.
